In February 2019, a database belonging to Verifications.io, a company that claimed to offer background check services, was leaked online. The database contained the personal information of millions of individuals, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.
The leak was discovered by researchers at the cybersecurity firm Comparitech, who alerted the public to the breach. According to their report, the database was found on a publicly accessible server and contained over 4 billion records.
It is unclear how the company obtained the personal information contained in the database, and it is possible that the information was gathered through illicit means.
